A trip to Matlock at the start of a season of huge expectation from me and The Cutters fans. A hectic transfer period was visible in the first game as our passing fell short of reasonable. When Mark Bentley scored for Matlock Town it wasn’t really out of the blue, this division had created its first sucker punch in our title dreams. We were rushing our passes, not a thing I like to see. I had tried my best to retain the services of Tuck and Rennison for these exact purposes but they had little effect on what happened in the first half. The start of the second half and although ripping into my team at the break they still looked sluggish and rather pitiful. Things were looking bad but in the 82nd minute Bryan Brough lashed in a volley to give us a point.
Next up was Vauxhall Motors away, a very difficult game. The passing training we had done all week had paid off however, Lew Tuck finding some space and hitting a sweet volley. Minutes later Motors leveled the scoreline as more questions were raised about our defending. Things looked bleak going into half time but a fumble from the opposing keeper gave Junior Dumbuya his first Cutters goal!!! A lighter mood in the dressing room resulted to us playing with a familiar exuberance in the second half. An injury to poor Alan Bradbury was the only downside to a very promising second half.
The first home game of the season had finally arrived and after a very difficult start we were craving victory on our nice [...]
